Stereotype threat, the subconscious fear that our actions or performance will confirm negative assumptions about our social identity, affects us all. While none of us wants to be defined by gender, sexual orientation, race, profession, age, nationality or political affiliation, all of us have experienced stereotype threat, whether we are aware of it or not. Dr. Steele’s research shows us how it inhibits cognitive and athletic performance and constrains our choices and behaviors. He will speak to parents and educators about how to recognize and neutralize the most damaging stereotype threats in our own educational landscapes.
