<h3>The Climate-Migration Conversation: Decolonizing the narrative around climate-related (im)mobilities</h3> <h4>Join the International School on Climate Mobilities and researchers from SOAS, University of London in this timely panel discussion about the ways in which we frame, understand and talk about climate-related (im)mobilities.</h4>The disproportionate and devastating impacts of both climate change and forced migration on countries and peoples in the so-called Global South are rooted in the enduring legacies of coloniality. As such, grounding debates, policies and research agendas on environment-related mobilities and displacement within a political economy of racial capitalist coloniality is crucial. It is necessary that we both historicize and contextualize the compounding crises purported by the climate change–forced migration nexus and interrogate the harmful narratives and processes that continue to unevenly (re)produce oppression and marginalization, as well as structural and epistemic violence.In line with SOAS tradition, that converges theory and practice across disciplines to apply decolonial approaches to global challenges (the inspirational heartbeat of the ISCM), this event will bring our co-hosts from SOAS, University of London together to discuss the unjust, gendered and racialised political economy the underpins the ‘climate migration conversation’. Directors from SOAS’ Centre for Migration and Diaspora Studies, the Centre for Human Rights Law and the Law, Environment and Development Centre will draw on their unique vantage points, spanning multiple disciplines, to ask: <ul><li>How and why have we have arrived at a present moment of global crises?;</li><li>How can we disrupt the (re)productive oppressive and violent logics of coloniality that got us here?;</li><li>Where can we go from here as researchers, advocates and practitioners who are committed to this disruption in our work?</li></ul> Speakers: Dr. Birsha OhdedarDr Birsha Ohdedar is Lecturer in Climate Change and Environmental Law and Governance at SOAS, Univerity of London. His research focuses on water and climate issues, from a human rights and justice perspective. Birsha is the Deputy Director of SOAS Law, Environment Development Centre (LEDC). Outside of SOAS, he is also a trustee for Legal Response International, an NGO that provides legal assistance and advice to climate vulnerable developing countries. Mr. KMS TareqMr. KMS Tareq is a PhD Researcher at SOAS, University of London, working on the effectiveness of international and domestic legal mechanisms in addressing climate change-related human mobility in Bangladesh. Before joining SOAS, Tareq was an Associate Professor of Law at University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh. Dr. Saad QuasemSaad works on the contemporary effects of colonial extraction, namely the making of private property in Bangladesh. His PhD thesis studied the chars (river islands) on the Brahmaputra River and the subjectivity of Chardwellers given the colonial and post-colonial nation-state's practices of appraising and appropriating land rather than water. Saad’s interests lie in understanding the subtle differentiation constructed between land and water by state regimes since the advent of colonialism through the fissures which are becoming clearer and clearer as climate change begins to pose a threat. Dr. Marie RodetMarie is a reader in the History of Africa at SOAS, University of London. Her principal research interests lie in the field of modern gender and migration history in francophone West Africa. Her current research offers a historical overview of emancipation strategies in the context of the end of slavery in Africa. Marie analyse how slave resistance, rebellions and mobility disrupted supposedly fixed relations of gender and power hierarchies leading to complex renegotiations for kinship, marriage, religious practices and, more generally, for notions of belonging in Mali and Senegal. Moderated by: Lauren Grant (ISCM)Lauren is a researcher, advocate and educator specialized in environmental and climate-related (im)mobilities. Her expertise lies in the political economy of racial capitalist coloniality of the disproportionate and uneven impacts of climate-linked and development-induced displacement on the livelihoods, wellbeing, futurity, endogenous development and rights of Indigenous peoples, minorities, women and girls. Lauren is Founding Director of the International School on Climate Mobilities (ISCM). She holds an MSc in Violence, Conflict and Development from SOAS University of London, an MA in Human Rights from Central European University and a BA in Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies.
