Russia’s full-scale invasion has turned Ukraine into the frontline of a global struggle. It is not only a war for land, but a war over sovereignty, security, and the principles of the international order. For Ukrainians, it is a fight to survive as a nation. For the rest of the world, it is a test of whether democracies can withstand the pressure of resurgent autocracy.
In this New Lines event, we will be joined by Yaroslav Trofimov, chief foreign affairs correspondent at The Wall Street Journal and author of No Country for Love, and Christina Lamb, chief foreign correspondent at The Sunday Times. Between them, they have reported from every major conflict of the past three decades, from Kabul to Kharkiv, and bring unmatched insight into both the human cost and the geopolitical stakes of Ukraine’s war.
Trofimov’s novel No Country for Love evokes an earlier Ukraine, where private lives were shattered as rival empires fought for dominance. The same tension runs through today’s war: the struggle to preserve identity, dignity, and love when politics and violence intrude on every part of life. Alongside him, Christina Lamb brings decades of reporting on the human cost of conflict, from Afghanistan to Syria, illuminating how the fate of individuals and the fate of nations are inseparable.
Join us as we discuss the faultlines between democracies and autocracies, the rise of the global south and the retreat of US power, as well as what the negotiations over the end of the Ukraine war reveal about conflict in the 21st century.
The event will be followed by a Q&A discussion.
