Nina Hartley: Four Talks at Center for Sex & Culture

Iconic porn star and sex educator Nina Hartley is scheduled for an upcoming weekend of classes at the Center for Sex & Culture, now located in the Folsom Street Center at 9th and Folsom. (CSC is grateful to Folsom Street Events for saving us space in their new building!) CSC welcomes Nina for its re-launch weekend—please come join us and enjoy words of wisdom from a real-life sex expert. Bring your questions! Times: Each class is an hour long.

What she’ll teach:

• What you have to know about choking play [Saturday, 11/16, 1pm]

It’s commonplace in porn and well-known in kink, but there’s a lot to know about safety and technique when someone adds choking and/or breath play to their erotic adventures. Nina trained as a nurse—she can explain it!

• A beginner’s guide to being a good sex customer [Saturday, 11/16, 7pm]

Whether you want to spend some intimate time with someone or want to experience a new sexual adventure, on- and offline pros in the sex industry are waiting to help. Learn about your options—and the etiquette!—from Nina. (She’ll also cover how it can be a great, if under-utilized, resource for women.)

• You're Not Late to the Party: Virginity as an opportunity to shape your sexual journey [Sunday, 11/17, 2pm]

There’s no given age when you have to “lose” your virginity. And there are a LOT of types of virginity, too, not just one definition. Whether that’s a word you’d use to describe yourself or not, come think about sexual thresholds in a new way and learn to make the most of them.

• Across the Generations: Benefits and Pitfalls of Age Play [Sunday, 11/17, 3:30pm]

We’re talking about adult-adult fantasy roleplay, just to be clear! Age play gives you all the benefits of negotiation and enthusiastic consent—and then you can time-travel to enjoy types of play that might never occur to your adult self. It’s never too late to have a happy childhood, right?

Nina Hartley began making porn films in 1984s after having been discovered by the great, late, lamented Juliet Anderson, aka Aunt Peg, who cast her in Educating Nina. Since then she’s made more than a thousand films and touched the lives of countless viewers and fans with her sex-positive and shame-free attitude about sex and relationships. Nina’s a legend and continues to inspire new performers to advocate for the kind of careers that best express their own sexual journeys. Nina herself was drawn to porn as a vehicle for sexual expression and exploration. She began directing films in the ‘90s and in that decade launched a series of explicit educational films. In 1997 she appeared with other adult industry friends doing non-porn roles in Boogie Nights. Nina’s activism in the world of free expression has led her to write, speak on campuses and elsewhere, give brilliant lectures while dancing, and serve on the boards of the Free Speech Coalition and the Woodhull Freedom Foundation.
