About the Event: Limmud Israel - Tel Aviv After Dark

In the great tradition of Limmud events worldwide, our Limmud Israel event is sure to deliver a tremendous quality of speaker and attract a diverse vibrant community of attendees. Our evening will host some of the top thinkers, leaders and decision makers of Israeli society from a wide range of backgrounds including the world's of finance, high-tech, politics, and media. Our speakers are not coming to officially represent any specific denomination of Jewish values beyond their own ideals, making this event supra-denominational. Each talk will revolve around the broad concept of "The Shared Destiny of the Jewish People" and include a Q&A session with the audience. Included in the evening will be wine tastings thanks to Golan Heights Winery, performances, and more...

Stay tuned for a complete list of speakers and final evening schedule. Note that most talks will be held in-English, specifically in honor of the Jewish Federations of North America's General Assembly that is being hosted in Tel Aviv. Limmud is honored to partner with the GA and look forward to hosting a great mix of Jews from around Israel and the world this evening.

Speaker Biographies

Ruth Calderon, former Member of Knesset and Deputy Speaker of the Knesset for the Yesh Atid party, is an educator and Talmud scholar. As part of her work promoting a Hebrew, Israeli, and Jewish culture that draws on traditional sources but looks to the future, she co-founded Elul (a pioneering pluralist beit midrash) with Moti Bar-Or, and founded and directed the Alma nonprofit for teaching and nurturing Hebrew culture. After eighteen years as director of Alma, Ruth was appointed head of the culture and education department at the National Library of Israel. She completed her masters degree and her doctorate in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s department of Talmud. In recognition of her work, Ruth was awarded the AVI CHAI Prize for Jewish Education, and honorary doctorates from the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, Hebrew College in Boston, and the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Philadelphia. She studied at the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem, and is a graduate of Cohort 1 of the Mandel School for Educational Leadership.

Dr. Efraim (Efi) Chalamish travels across the globe to lecture, provide high-level government counsel, educate and inspire. He is a professor of international economic law at New York University and has an international legal practice in New York, Paris, and Israel on such issues as international arbitration disputes and energy and cross-border transactions for multinational clients. He has also served as a Global Fellow at New York University, exploring global governance of corporations and multilateral institutions, the intersection of business and national security, and global governance and financial regulation. His articles have been published in leading journals and magazines in the United States and Europe, and he is the founder and president of the Global Center for Economic Development and Security. When he isn’t travelling, teaching, or writing you will find him entertaining or being entertained by his three little girls: Ella, Amalia and Adele (twins).

Beth Cousens holds a PhD in the Sociology of Jewish Education from Brandeis University (2008, matriculation 2001), an MA with honors in Jewish Studies from Baltimore Hebrew University (1996), an MSW from the University of Maryland (1996), and a Certificate in Jewish Communal Service from the Baltimore Institute in Jewish Communal Service (1996). She received a BA (1994) from the University of Michigan in English and Creative Writing.

She has over twenty years of professional leadership experience, working in educational policy and strategy and directly as an educator. She has particular expertise building educational settings that maximize opportunities for individuals to develop as independent Jewish adults, owning their Jewish ideas and practices. Her expertise also focuses on younger (“emerging”) Jewish adults.

Beth lives in San Francisco with her husband and son.

Michael Eisenberg is the Co-Founder, Founding Manager, Founding Partner and Partner of Aleph Venture Capital. Mr. Eisenberg is responsible for internet and mobile ventures. He joined Aleph on June 9, 2005. Mr. Eisenberg was a General Partner and Partner of Benchmark Capital. Since 2005, Mr. Eisenberg had been a General Partner at Benchmark Capital Partners. He was responsible for managing the portfolio in the U.S. and Israel. He co-founded Jerusalem Global Investment Banking. Throughout Mr. Eisenberg's career, he has focused on software and Internet infrastructure and investments for early stage companies. He was ranked No. 1 on the Forbes Israel Midas List. He was included in the 25 Best Venture Capitalists in Europe in Forbes Midas Europe 2017. He is named to 2018 Forbes’ Midas List of Top Tech Investors. He lectures frequently on the topics of venture capital and entrepreneurship at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Mr. Eisenberg holds a B.A. in Political Science from Yeshiva University in New York.

Jonathan Feldman is a community educator for the Am Yisrael Foundation’s Tel Aviv Center of Jewish Life, an organization that runs cultural, social and educational programming building community for young adult Israelis in Tel Aviv. He was formerly East Side Director of Manhattan Jewish Experience for 17 years. Jonathan grew up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, and after attending Cornell University he received his ordination from Yeshiva University and his Ph.D. in Jewish Studies from New York University. He, his wife and children made Aliyah this summer and are enjoying working on their Hebrew, exploring the more remote parts of the country and learning to be Sabras.

Michael Freedman is founder and Executive Director of ASQ Israel, which provides a range of merchant banking services, taking the best of both worlds (Anglo institution, Israeli innovation), to create a new model of investment in Israel. Alon Friedman assumed the position of Director General of Hillel Israel in August 2012. From 2008-2012, Alon served as Director of Israel Operations for MASA. Prior to his position with MASA, Alon was the Executive Director of the Hadassah WUJS Institute in Arad. Between 2001 and 2004, Alon served as the Young Judaea Shaliach (Israeli representative) in New York, responsible for recruitment and training of pro-Israel students on campuses across the United States. Alon was born in Tel Aviv, raised in Jerusalem, and served as an officer in the Israeli Army. He holds an MA in Communications and Journalism and a BA in Sociology and Anthropology, both from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Akiva Fuld hails from a family of educators and professional communicators, and has been an educator, and teacher of communications for over 20 years. Through his work training teachers, salespeople and help-hotline operators, Akiva has acquired the experience and knowledge that has led him to his present project: writing 4 separate, though unified, Haggadot focused on communicating the Exodus to whoever is present at the Seder table.

Akiva dedicates his Limmud session to one of the greatest teachers he has ever had the privilege of knowing and loving - his cousin Ari Fuld z”tl, who was recently taken from this world too early.

David Horovitz is the founding editor of The Times of Israel. Previously editor-in-chief of The Jerusalem Post & editor and publisher of the award-winning news magazine The Jerusalem Report, David has written from Israel for newspapers around the world, including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Irish Times and (London) Independent, and is a frequent interviewee on CNN, the BBC, Sky, Fox News, NPR and other TV and radio stations.

Horovitz lectures widely in Israel, the United States and Europe on Israeli current affairs. He has conducted landmark interviews with a succession of Israeli and international figures, including all of Israel’s recent prime ministers, Presidents Barack Obama and George Bush, as well as Tony Blair, Vladimir Putin and, to the particular delight of his children, Paul McCartney.

Horovitz is the author of 2004’s “Still Life with Bombers: Israel in the Age of Terrorism,” and 2000’s “A Little Too Close to God: The Thrills and Panic of a Life in Israel,” both published in the US by Knopf. He edited and co-wrote The Jerusalem Report’s 1996 biography of Yitzhak Rabin, “Shalom, Friend,” which was published in 12 countries and won the U.S. National Jewish Book Award for Non-Fiction. He was the recipient of 2005’s JDC award for journalism on Israel and Diaspora Affairs, and winner of the 1995 Bnai Brith World Center award for journalism. In 2014, he was awarded Bnai Brith’s lifetime achievement journalism award.

Ron Huldai is currently serving his fourth consecutive five-year term as Mayor of Tel Aviv-Yafo. His economic vision for Tel Aviv-Yafo is to position it as a global center of innovation and creativity. Capitalizing on the city’s status as the center of the Israeli technology sector, Huldai’s efforts focus on leveraging Tel Aviv as “The Startup City of the Startup Nation” – an urban center that enjoys the highest rate in the world of startup companies and technological accelerators per capita of per square kilometer. Ron was born in 1944 and raised in Kibbutz Hulda. He joined the Israeli Air Force in 1963 and served as a combat pilot and base commander for 26 years. After retiring with the rank of Brigadier General, Huldai became principal of the renowned Herzlyia Gymnasium High School. During his 6-year term he managed to transform the deteriorated school into a model of educational excellence. Mayor Huldai is a distinguished graduate of the United States Air Force’s American Air War College (’81) and holds a Bachelor of General Studies from Auburn University of Montgomery (’81). He is married to Yael, and they have 3 children and 9 grandchildren.

Chana Kanzen B.Ed(hons) QTS. Dip.Ed now CEO of Jewish Interactive. In 2013 she set up Jewish Interactive in the UK, now a thriving NGO. She currently still directs the UK’s expanding team and sits on their Board of Directors. She has helped to write and develop integrated curricula, established community programmes and regularly lectures to parents and teachers on a variety of educational topics. She has spoken at Google HQ in London and Tel Aviv, Apple HQ London and NYC and at Oxford University’s Department for Education. Before joining Jewish Interactive, Chana was a teacher mentor at the Jewish Curriculum Partnership, Head of Jewish studies at Morasha Jewish Primary school in London, England. Chana is passionate about innovative kodesh teaching and enjoys nothing more than watching children’s faces light up as they experience Judaism through JI.

Tel Aviv Cantorial Institute is a non-profit institute aiming:

1) To educate its students, in a formal course of study, to become professional Cantors and communal leaders.

2) To enhance the general community's understanding of its Jewish heritage and culture through lectures, concerts and other programs in Israel and abroad.

3) To organize formal and informal educational programs for young people (10-16) enhancing their knowledge of Judaism and creating greater understanding among the disparate communities within Israeli society.

4) To serve as a conduit between chazzanim and Jewish communities world-wide who seek the services of professional cantors and chaplains.

Joanna Landau was born in London and moved to Israel with her family when she was 5 years old. She returned briefly to the UK for high school at the Jewish boarding school Carmel College. After serving in the IDF as a paramedic, she read law at Cambridge University where she gained BA and MA degrees. Joanna also holds an MBA, cum laude, from the Herzlia Interdisciplinary Center in Israel. Joanna worked as a lawyer in the high-tech industry and established two Internet start-ups based in Tel Aviv. In 2009, Joanna founded Vibe Israel, to change the way people think and feel about Israel, and has been leading it ever since. In 2016 Vibe Israel was a finalist in a prestigious international competition by City Nation Place, the global forum of place branding experts, for the Best Use of Social Media in Place Branding Award.

Joanna is a governor of Tel Aviv University and a member of the International Education Committee of Taglit-Birthright. In 2015 she was shortlisted for the Rappaport Prize for a Change Making Woman, and in 2016 she won the popular vote for the most influential woman in management and business, recognized by Saloona, Israel's leading women's online magazine. In 2017, Joanna was listed by Forbes Israel as one of the fifty most influential women in Israel. She lives in Tel-Aviv with her husband and three children.

Alon Lifshitz is Managing Partner at Hanaco Ventures, a $300m Tel Aviv VC, investing mainly in software companies. Alon has been involved in the Israeli tech market for more than 19 years, and served as board member of some of Israel's fastest growing companies.

Benji Lovitt made Aliyah in 2006, and is a comedian/educator. Benji has performed for audiences around the world including Jewish Federations, synagogues, Hillels, Birthright Israel, and more. His perspectives have been featured in media outlets such as BBC Radio, USA Today, Time Magazine, the Atlantic, and the Times of Israel. His annual Yom Ha’atzmaut list of things he loves about Israel has developed a huge following and his humorous observations during 2014’s Operation Protective Edge led to his being called “the only reason to go on Facebook.”

Jonathan Medved is a serial entrepreneur and according to the Washington Post (Dec 5, 2007) “one of Israel’s leading high tech venture capitalists”. September 2008, the NY Times Supplement “Israel at 60” Medved was named one of the “top 10 most influential Americans who have impacted Israel”. In May 22, 2015 Edition of the Jerusalem Post, Medved was named one of the World’s “50 most influential Jews”.

Medved currently is the founder and CEO of OurCrowd, the leading global equity crowdfunding platform for accredited investors and angels. OurCrowd, according to Forbes (August 13, 2013) is “one of the largest crowdfunding organizations on the planet” having raised over $750M for over 160 portfolio companies and 21 exits since its launch in February 2013. Eli Ovits is chief executive of Limmud. Representing Limmud in 43 countries, Eli supports the development of Limmud, its programs, and its volunteers. Eli is a Captain (res) in the IDF Spokespersons Unit and a graduate of Hebrew University. He has lectured/traveled widely working to combat extremism and strengthen our global Jewish community.

Olivier Rafowicz moved from France to Israel in 1981, when he was 19 years old, while his family remained in Paris. He then studied Political Science and International Relations at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He is a reserve colonel having served for twenty years in the IDF, where he acted as the spokesman and has been frequently interviewed on international TV and radio channels.

He served as the Director of the Jewish Agency and the Emissary for the Jewish National Fund (JDF) in Europe. During his tenure, over 10,000 French Jews made Aliyah. Moreover, Olivier served as the CEO of Infolive TV.

Olivier’s family suffered greatly during the Holocaust. This led him to devote his life to strengthening Israel and its army to prevent such a tragedy from ever occurring again.

He has published two books, “Israel-Hezbollah, prelude à la 3ème guerre mondiale?” (Israel-Hezbollah, prelude to the 3rd world war?) and “Le temps du retour: de Paris à Jerusalem” (The time of return: from Paris to Jerusalem), with a third expected to come out in November 2018, “Israel - une chance pour le monde” (Israel - an opportunity for the world”).

The Shared Destiny of the Jews in the Land of Israel

Natan Sharansky was born in Donetsk, Ukraine. He was a spokesman for the human rights movement, a Prisoner of Zion and leader in the struggle for the right of Soviet Jews to immigrate to Israel. Subsequent to his request to make aliya, Mr. Sharansky was arrested on trumped up charges of treason and espionage. He was convicted in a Soviet court and served nine years in the Gulag with many stretches in a punishing cell. Following massive public campaigns by the State of Israel, World Jewry and leaders of the free world, Mr. Sharansky was released in 1986, making aliya on the very day of his release.

2009-2018 Natan Sharansky served as Chairman of the Executive of the Jewish Agency for Israel. The primary mission of the Jewish Agency is guaranteeing the future of the Jewish People by strengthening the connection of every Jew to the State of Israel and to the Jewish people.

Mr. Sharansky is also the author of three books: Fear No Evil, The Case for Democracy and Defending Identity. He remains a champion of the right of all people to live in freedom and believes that the advancement of human rights is critical to peace and security around the world.

Jay M. Shultz is the President of the Am Yisrael Foundation, founding multiple non-profit organizations in both the US and Israel. The Am Yisrael Foundation (www.AmYisrael.com) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that launches, supports and funds initiatives that empower modern pioneering amongst Jewish young adults. Observant Zionism is made manifest in everything we do to move onwards and upwards as a People. We focus on activities which promote Jewish tradition, civic engagement, volunteerism, and vibrant communities- positively building up our Nation by connecting to our ancestral Homeland, with a special focus on Tel Aviv. Jay moved up to Israel in 2006 from New York City and currently resides in Tel Aviv with his wife Rachelle and son, Wolf. He plays piano and is an avid collector of art and antiquities.

Sarah Tuttle-Singer was raised in Venice Beach, California on Yiddish lullabies and Civil Rights anthems.

She now lives in Israel with her two kids where she climbs roofs, explores cisterns, opens secret doors and talks to strangers.

Sarah has written for a variety of places including Times of Israel, Kveller, TIME.com, and Ladies Home Journal about her life in Israel, her love of Jerusalem, and her family. But mostly she just writes about people.

She is the author of the book Jerusalem Drawn and Quartered, an intimate memoir about her experience living in the hottest piece of spiritual real estate IN THE WORLD.

A Distinguished Scholar of North American History at McGill University, he is a leading presidential historian and Zionist activist. Featured on CNN’s popular Eighties and Nineties documentaries, he is the award-winning author of eleven other books, including Moynihan’s Moment: America’s Fight against Zionism as Racism, The Age of Clinton: America in the 1990s, See How They Ran: The Changing Role of the Presidential Candidate, and Why I am A Zionist: Israel, Jewish Identity and the Challenges of Today. Einat Wilf is a leading intellectual and original thinker on matters of foreign policy, economics, education, and Israel and the Jewish people. She is considered one of Israel’s most articulate representatives on the international stage. Her opinion articles are regularly published in international publications and she is frequently interviewed for television and radio programs around the world. She was a member of the Israeli Parliament from 2010-2013 on behalf of the Labor and Independence parties. Dr. Wilf has a BA in Government and Fine Arts from Harvard University, an MBA from INSEAD in France, and a PhD in Political Science from the University of Cambridge. She is the author of six books that explore key issues in Israeli society, her two most books are “Telling Our Story” - a collection of Wilf’s essays on Israel, Zionism and the path to peace, and “The War of Return” on the perpetuation of the Palestinian refugee issue.
