Inauguration: Mexicalidad

The Mexican Cultural Institute of Washington, D.C. is committed to enriching the relationship between Mexico and the United States by sharing Mexico's vibrant cultural past and present with the local community. Since its establishment in 1990, the Institute has succeeded in presenting diverse, ongoing cultural programs and has become a thriving artistic center in the heart of Washington. Over the past two decades, the Institute has developed cultural programming in partnership with many institutions in the nation's capital including the Smithsonian Institution, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the National Gallery of Art, the Library of Congress, among others.

Join us for the inauguration of our newest exhibit: Mexicalidad, a collection of Mexican designs.

The Mexican Cultural Institute, in partnership with MODO, Museo del Objeto del Objeto (the Purpose of the Object Museum), is proud to announce its newest exhibit: Mexicalidad: diseño nuevas generaciones, opening on Wednesday, November 20 at 6:45 pm at the Institute.
About the exhibit
Mexicalidad makes a review of the work, the thought and the creative process that accompanies a young generation of designers in Mexico. The project stems from the conviction of the social and cultural impact that occurs when one remembers that Mexico is also art, culture, creativity and innovation. It contains a selection of 164 pieces and projects that show what designs are currently being produced in Mexico.

An important section of the exhibition presents a series of projects that address specific problems and integrate an awareness of the social or environmental impact in their production processes. The selection was realized through a curatorial council led by curator Graciela Kasep and made up of professionals from the field: Cynthia Gómez, Omar Cruz and Ricardo Lozano. In addition, it is important to note that the museography, created by Giacomo Castagnola, provides a novel way of perceiving and displaying objects, inspired by the wirework used in many traveling markets in Mexico and manufactured for the exhibition by artisan Jesús Aguilar Pérez.
