About this event

What is the seminar?

To celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Manchester Breast Centre (MBC) is hosting an online event to share the scientific developments with members of the public. This seminar is the first in a new series of MBC public engagement events, and will focus on the risk factors and prevention of breast cancer.

Who should attend?

This seminar is for anyone wanting to find out more about the risk factors and prevention of breast cancer. It is for all members of the public.

3:30pm - What type of clinical approaches can be used to prevent breast cancer? Dr Sacha Howell

3:40pm - What are the benefits of breast feeding? Prof Charles Streuli

  • How the breast makes milk

How do I access the seminar?

Who will be speaking?

  • Professor Rob Clarke, PhD Rob Clarke is a Professor of Breast Biology and Director of the Manchester Breast Centre, comprising 38 basic, translational and clinician scientists active in breast cancer research. His research investigations will lead to an increased understanding of the biology of the normal and malignant human breast which, in turn, could lead to the development of new strategies or new targets for prevention of primary and secondary breast cancer.
  • Professor Cliona Kirwan, MBBS BSc (Hons) FRCS(gen) PhD Cliona Kirwan is a Clinician Scientist in Surgical Oncology and Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon. Her work is split equally between clinical work and academia. Clinically, Cliona leads diagnostic and follow up clinics for breast disease, particularly breast cancer and she performs all forms of surgery for the treatment of breast disease. Her main focus of research is the symbiotic relationship between cancer and clotting.
  • Professor Gareth Evans, MB BS MD FRCP FLSW Professor Gareth Evans is an international leader in cancer genetics, with a focus on neurofibromatosis and breast cancer. His research has led him to conclude that risk stratification offers the best way of targeting prevention and early detection (PED) approaches.
  • Dr Sacha Howell, PhD FRCP Dr Sacha Howell is a medical oncologist with a specialist interest in therapeutic cancer prevention. He runs clinical trials testing novel approaches to breast cancer prevention, including biopsies of the breast tissue, to try and work out how such treatments work and in which women they are most likely to be of benefit.
  • Professor Charles Streuli, MA PhD Professor Charles Streuli is a founding member of the Manchester Breast Centre and the Breakthrough Research Unit in Manchester. His research is focussed on cell-matrix interactions in breast biology. Understanding how normal mammary epithelial cells work is revealing new targets and pathways for treating breast cancer.
  • Dr Ahmet Ucar, PhD Dr Ahmet Ucar is a Breast Cancer Now-funded research fellow at the University of Manchester. His research aims to better understand the biology of the early changes in the breast that leads to the formation of tumours, with a particular focus on the link between the normal stem cells within the breast and the cancer stem cells of the breast tumours.

Prevent Breast Cancer is the only UK charity funding ground-breaking research solely aimed at preventing breast cancer for future generations.

As the only UK charity entirely dedicated to the prediction and prevention of breast cancer, we’re committed to freeing the world from the disease altogether. Unlike many cancer charities, we’re focused on preventing, rather than curing. Promoting early diagnosis, screening and lifestyle changes, we believe we can stop the problem before it starts. And being situated at the only breast cancer prevention centre in the UK, at The Nightingale Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital, we’re right at the front-line in the fight against the disease.
