About this event

  • Event lasts 6 hours

Explore Antietam Battlefield and Crystal Grottoes Caverns on Saturday, October 18th, as the Washington County Historical Society travels back in time to visit our historic landscape. WCHS Executive Director Andy Stout, together with WCHS staff, board members, and historical site guides, will guide our group for the day!

The bus tour will meet at the JC Penney parking lot located on the East side of the Valley Mall in Hagerstown, MD. The group will depart from this location by bus at 9:00 AM. Guests should plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to departure.

Our first stop of the day will be Antiteam National Battlefield, site of the famous 1862 Civil War battle, located in the heart of Washington County, MD. A national park guide will join us for a program and tour of the battlefield. After our tour of Antietam, we'll enjoy complimentary box lunches at a nearby park.

Following lunch, we will head to the Crystal Grottoes Caverns, where we'll dive deeper into Washington County's past. Crystal Grottoes was discovered in 1920 in the course of quarrying operations by a road construction crew trying to obtain gravel. It is the only public, commercial cave in the State of Maryland.

After visiting Crystal Grottoes, we’ll return to the JC Penney parking lot at the Valley Mall by 3:30 PM.

Price per guest is $60 for WCHS members and $75 for non-members (tickets include all fees for Crystal Grottoes and Antietam National Battlefield). Includes lunch, snacks and drinks, and all admission fees. Non-member tickets include a complimentary WCHS individual membership. Contact us at 301-797-8782 or email us at info@washcohistory.org to make your reservation.

Lunch Note: Please let us know if you are vegetarian or have any dietary restrictions.
