About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

Join us for a conversation with Philadelphia-based oil painter Elizabeth Bergeland (b. 1983), as she discusses her recent series While You Were Sleeping, currently on view at Studio 105 at Ray Philly. Bergeland’s work blends figurative realism with symbolic, surreal elements to examine themes of motherhood, ambition, identity, and the demands of daily life.

She’ll be joined by Heather Blakeslee, founding publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Root Quarterly, a Philadelphia print journal focused on art, ideas, and civic dialogue. Blakeslee is also an Arts Fellow, founder of Red Pen Arts, and was recently named 2024 Storyteller of the Year by The Philadelphia Citizen. With more than 25 years of experience in the arts and publishing, she brings a journalist’s lens to unpack the ideas and experiences behind Bergeland’s work.
