Callysto Vancouver: Online High School Student “Hackathon”

Callystois a free, online learning tool that helps Grades 5-12 students and teachers in Canada learn and apply in-demand data science skills including data analysis, visualization, coding, and computational thinking. The program is a project byCyberaand thePacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences(PIMS), with funding from the federal government’sCanCodeprogram, to build and employ new technologies that promote digital literacy and help Canada’s youth develop the foundational skills required to become the future drivers of innovation.About the key partnersCyberais a not-for-profit technology-neutral organization responsible for driving Alberta’s economic growth through the use of digital technology. Its core role is to oversee the development and operations of Alberta’s cyberinfrastructure — the advanced system of networks and computers that keeps government, educational institutions, not-for-profits, business incubators and entrepreneurs at the forefront of technological change.Working with government, education, and private sectors, Cybera is creating a community that champions vital networking and computing services and utilities for everyone, everywhere. We also provide member organizations with unbiased, highly skilled expertise in technology products, processes or services, and access to shared IT tools.PIMSis a collaborative network dedicated to the promotion of discovery, understanding and awareness in the mathematical sciences. PIMS brings together leading researchers from major Universities across western Canada, as well as the University of Washington, and is a Unité Mixte Internationale of the National Center for Scientific Research (Le Centre national de la recherche scientifique, CNRS).PIMS sponsors and organizes educational and community outreach, aboriginal math camps, and summer schools for both teachers and students, as well as initiatives to promote diversity in mathematics, partnerships that bring mathematical research to industry, cutting-edge mathematical and scientific research, and events across the PIMS network that promote advancement in computer science, pure and applied mathematics, and statistics.

<h3>Description</h3><p>Are you a Grades 10-12 high school student in B.C.? Do you enjoy solving puzzles and working with computers? If you do, sign up for this free, online &quot;hackathon&quot;!</p><p>This online &quot;hackathon&quot; is run by Callysto, a free, interactive, online tool which teaches data science skills to Grades 5-12 students. You&#x27;ll use Python code to “hack” Vancouver-based open data to solve a variety of challenges. In one of our challenges, you’ll help Vancouver get back on its feet after a “zombie apocalypse.”</p><p>The data detective with the best challenge solution will win an Amazon Fire 8 tablet!</p><p>Don’t know how to use Python code? That’s ok! Our Callysto experts will help.</p><p></p><h3>What you need to attend the hackathon:</h3><ul><li>An internet connection</li><li>A fully-charged computer or tablet with Google Chrome or FireFox internet browsers installed.</li><li>A Google or Microsoft email.</li></ul><p></p><h3>How the online &quot;hackathon&quot; will run</h3><p>Prior to the event, registrants will receive full instructions including a link on how to join the “hackathon” online and submit their completed work. Below is an overview of what to expect:</p><p>1. Instructions and tutorials</p><ul><li>Instructions on how to get help, access materials, and submit your work.</li><li>Introductory tutorials on Python, Pandas, and data structures. </li></ul><p>2. Submit your “hackathon” challenge</p><ul><li>The submissions deadline is Saturday, April 18, 2020 at 2pm PDT. You can send in your submission before this time as well. </li></ul><p>3.
