In alignment with Lansing&#x27;s commitment to Truth, Racial Healing &amp; Transformation (TRHT), the hackathon is a space for community members, students, and professionals to come together to brainstorm innovative actions for securing a regional commitment to racial equity in the Greater Lansing Metro Area.
A few months ago, La June Montgomery Tabron talked about the business case for racial equity in Michigan, stressing the importance of racial equity as both an imperative for social justice and a strategy for Michigan’s economic development and growth. By 2050, Michigan stands to realize a $92 billion gain in economic output by closing the racial equity gap. For example, closing racial wage gaps across Michigan would generate an additional $15 billion in earnings today. Addressing gaps in health disparities between people of color and whites could save the state $4.1 billion in excess medical costs and $1.9 billion in lost productivity. These are just a few of the areas where we can make powerful changes in Michigan.
Mayor Schor has made a commitment to racial equity in Lansing, and we seek creative action planning to grow this to a regional commitment. Joining the hackathon is an opportunity to help craft a business case for racial equity in the Lansing Metro Region and keep progress moving forward.
