GE Cybersecurity Software Development Hackathon

The Department of Computer Science is home to three bachelor degrees, two master degrees and nine certificates and minors all aimed toward producing graduates who are highly capable problem solvers that are intellectually agile, technically skilled and ethically responsible. Our department focuses on our students, our community and student/faculty research.

<h2>What is it like to be a cybersecurity professional?</h2>Experience it yourself by joining the GE Cybersecurity Software Development Hackathon! In this two-day event, you will be part of a team of a Cybersecurity task force that will work on a challenge sponsored by General Electric: you will be asked to improve a web application, secure it against hackers, make it look great, and enhance its features.By joining the event as an individual or as a team, you will learn new skills, meet great people, collaborate with friends, network with professionals from GE and the cybersecurity world, and have fun!This event is reserved to students enrolled in a College/University. Teams that sign up early (before Dec 15th!) can get an hour of GE employee helping them on their team during the Hackathon! <h3>The challenge </h3>GE Cybersecurity experts will provide teams with an early-stage web application consisting of a front-end (client side) and a back-end (server side) that will have several design, security, and usability flaws. The teams will be asked to use (or learn new) design and programming skills to identify and fix all the issues and to improve the overall functioning of the application. To this end, they can use HTML, CSS, and Javascript. However, they will also be able to use other programming languages (e.g., Java, Python, and PHP), create a database (e.g., using SQL or a noSQL system) and use third-party services (e.g., AWS, Firebase). In addition to programming the functionality of the web application, its look&amp;feel and usability will also have to be taken into consideration.Don't be intimidated by the challenge: this event is meant for learning new skills and meeting like-minded people! Feel free to join if you don't know any programming languages but you are interested in cybersecurity or curious about informatics!During the challenge, mentors from GE, NKU, and partner organizations will be there to assist you and help your team. This is a Bring Your Own Device event: you will work on your own computer.At the end of the event, the teams will present their work to a panel of judges that will assign prizes to the best solutions.

<h3>Prizes</h3>There is a 600$ prize pool that will be assigned to different categories, such as, most secure solution, app with the coolest front-end, and solution with the best architecture. Moreover, there will be cool merchandising from GE. Food will be served throughout the event.<h3>Who can participate</h3>This event is open to students enrolled in a College/University and with a valid .edu e-mail address (e.g., einsteina1@nku.edu).If you already have a team, you can register your team and its members. If you don't have a team, you can register as an individual: we will help you create your team on the day of the event.Although the focus of the event is cybersecurity and there will be some programming involved, students from all majors are invited to join: this is an opportunity to meet great people, network with professionals from General Electric, and have fun!<h3>Where and when</h3>The event will be held in the <a href="https://map.nku.edu/#!FAC_2016050841656" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Digitorium</a>, located in the first floor of <a href="https://inside.nku.edu/campusplanning/building/academic/griffinhall.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Griffin Hall</a>, the building of the College of Informatics.The event will start on Friday, January 17th at 4 pm and will end on Saturday, January 18th at 5pm.

<h3>Schedule</h3>Friday, January 17th 2020<ul><li>4:00 – 5:00 =&gt; set up in room, attendee sign ins, team assignment (for those who did not already sign up as a team)
</li><li>5:00 – 6:00 =&gt; Kick off, welcome speaker (Chris Carissimi), talk through weekend plans, send out project

</li><li>5:00 – 6:00 =&gt; clean up</li></ul><h3>Frequently Asked Questions</h3>Do I need to bring my own laptop?Yes, this hackathon is a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) event.Do I need to have any specific Operating System installed?No, you will be able to participate regardless of the Operating System installed on your computer.Do I need to install any specific software?No, you will not need to install any specific software. However, you might need to download some packages (in this case, instructions will be given via e-mail).Do I need to be a student to participate?Yes, the event is open to students enrolled in college. Do I need to be an NKU student to participate?No, yuou don&#x27;t need to necessarily be affiliated with Northern Kentucky University to participate. Students from any Institutions are welcome.I don&#x27;t have a team. Can I participate?Yes!!! We will help you create your team on the day of the event.Which programming languages/systems will be utilized?Teams will work on a web application built using HTML, CSS, and Javascript. However, there will also be the opportunity to use Java, Python, SQL. You are not required to know all of these languages and systems.I don&#x27;t know any programming languages. Can I participate?Yes! This is a great opportunity to use the experience that you already have, learn new skills, meet great people, and network with professionals from General Electric and with professors from NKU.Do I need to bring my own food?No: there will be a catering service that will make sure your belly will be full and your body will be hydrated.
