Overview

What Can You Do To Help Houstonians Impacted By Climate Change?

The climate crisis is threatening to fundamentally change the way we live. Here in Houston, we’re on the front lines of that change, as seen recently in the natural disasters that hit our city. Minority and low-income communities, in particular, are disproportionately impacted by the adverse effects of climate change. Whether it’s due to flooding, heat waves, or other factors associated with extreme weather events, the underprivileged are most at risk from this crisis. Some of the impacts can include an increase in homelessness, poverty, and both physical and mental health problems, among other things.

At the Social Good Hackathon, Who Is Hussain is looking to address these issues and is inviting our communities to come together to find innovative and affordable solutions to help our fellow Houstonians. No idea is too big or too small! We want participants to engage in creative problem-solving and explore all the different avenues through which the climate crisis directly or indirectly impacts us. This can include developing ideas for apps, humanitarian tech, housing projects, agriculture, food, infrastructure improvements, education, financing, government policy and regulations or any number of ways to make a difference.

Participants will spend the day working with mentors to guide them and will present their ideas to a panel of judges at the end. Cash prizes will be awarded for the top 2 ideas to emerge from this effort. With the Social Good Hackathon, we seek to inspire innovation, collaboration, compassion and, above all, HOPE.
