Postponed: EarthWays Student Innovation Challenge

The EarthWays Center (EWC) is the sustainability division of the Missouri Botanical Garden. EWC is devoted to an increasingly vital goal: conservation of energy and other natural resources for the future while meeting the needs of the current generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs - otherwise known as sustainability.While the Garden is a botanical institution focusing on plants themselves, the EarthWays Center zeroes in on what botanical researchers agree is the greatest threat to plants and the environment: people. Through programs that support schools, green building professionals, buisnesses, municipalities, and the general public, EWC encourages people to better understand and take part in creating a healthier ecosystem for all living things.

Update: Out of an abundance of caution the Missouri Botanical Garden has expanded our policies and restrictions in response to the COVID-19 situation. We are postponing all programming and meetings on site and postponing our attendance at all community meetings and events.
The Student Innovation Challenge is postponed until further notice.

Students from around the St. Louis community will join EarthWays Center in a one-day design challenge/hackathon where innovation, creativity and imagination are the key to solving real-world environmental problems. Through this challenge, students will build their understanding of recycling and reducing waste, environmental connections, and problem-solving and technology skills as they work to design and develop solutions. Students can either design a physical solution or a technological one using the software Balsamiq. 
Students will have one morning to come up with a unique solution to the problem of ocean pollution, devise a prototype and a pitch, and present their solution to a panel of expert judges from the waste, sustainability, and startup industries. There will be prizes for winners, as well as the opportunity to interact with other like minded innovators!

Students can register as teams of 3 to 4 - just register all the students together in the same order. Students that register as individuals will be placed in teams based on age.

Funding for this program provided by the St. Louis-Jefferson Solid Waste Management District.
Lunch will be provided to student participants through a generous donation from Seed Sprout Spoon.
