Join us for the 2019 NASA Space Apps Challenge, a global hackathon in which teams work together to address challenges in Earth science and space exploration. Scientists, artists, programmers, students, makers, and anyone with a creative mindset is welcome to participate!Two winning teams from each location will be nominated for global judging. Those teams will create a short video demo for their project, and judges from NASA will select a handful of global finalists from hundreds of submissions. The global winner will receive a trip to NASA Kennedy Space Center for a rocket launch!For two weeks leading up to the hackathon, we will host a series of online data bootcamps to introduce hackers to tools and technologies which will empower them in designing their projects. These bootcamps will be free for all and take place during week nights. We will also include talks from Earth and space scientsts to provide key insight into the science behind the challenges themselves.During the evening of Friday, October 18th we will have our mandatory hacker orientation. Everyone participating in the hackathon will check in, grab dinner, set up all required software accounts, learn about the challenges, hear from our sponsors and mentors about the support available during the weekend, form teams, and get ready for a weekend of hacking.On the morning of Saturday, October 19th, everyone will return to the hackathon space for breakfast and our hacakthon kickoff, and then get to hacking! Lunch and dinner will also be served.Organizers and volunteers will be on hand to assist with any questions and help with team placement. Technology and science mentors will also be available in person and virtually to float between teams and answer any questions.Sunday, October 20th we have breakfast and wrap up our projects. Project submission is at noon, followed by lunch. Team demos will start shortly after lunch, will be globally livestreamed, and is open for friends and family to attend (we will send out a separate form for adding people to the guest list for demos).Around 5pm we will conclude the demos, select sponsors will present their specially branded awards, and our judges will announce the hackathon winners!

The NASA Brisbane International will be hosted on the 19th and 20th of October 2019.Innovation Initiative?NASA’s International Space Apps Challenge has become the world’s largest global hackathon, engaging thousands of citizens across the globe to use NASA’s open data to build innovative solutions to challenges we face on Earth and in space.Global Collaboration?In a world-wide collaboration, local delegates compete against international teams during the weekend-long event. In 2018, the global event took place in 187 locations, where 25,000 participants worked on innovative projects. The international competition attracts talent from a multiplicity of disciplines, including science, engineering, technology, mathematics, health, law, business, education and creative industries.

We welcome all and everyone. Whether you are a coder extraordinaire, a rocket scientist, or simply a student with an affinity for space, you have a place here.WHAT IS THE MINIMUM AGE FOR PARTICIPANTS?There is no minimum age for participation in Space Apps, and many youth and children have participated in past events. We only note that participants under 13 must have a parent or guardian register for them and attend with them. Participants under the age of 18 require adult supervision for the entirety of the hackathon.DO I REGISTER AS AN INDIVIDUAL OR AS A TEAM?Participants will need to register as individuals, not teams. Participants will form project teams at Space Apps events and teams will submit their projects by creating a project page on the day of the hackathon.WHAT IF I'VE NEVER BEEN TO A HACKATHON BEFORE?Welcome! Participants of all skill levels will be there. We’ll have talks, mentors and workshops to help you with your project; hackathons can be a great place to learn new skills in a short amount of time. Just be eager to learn, and excited to meet lots of awesome people.IS THE EVENT LIMITED TO JUST SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT?Absolutely not, Space Apps projects don't have to be apps. We need people with all types of skills to participate! Teams need project managers, designers, artists, educators, writers - anyone who can help advance the cause. You can contribute! Participants in the event will collaborate to build software, open hardware, data visualization, and citizen science platform solutions that contribute to solving global challenges that focus on improving life on earth. In fact, most teams will benefit from having non-programmers working with them.
