English Air quality is important 24/7. That’s why we’re going to put in these hours to help improve the air quality around us. An unseen but not undetected societal problem hacked by everyone in it. This time the sky is NOT the limit.Did you know …That air pollution shortens the life of the average person in The Netherlands by 9 months? Air quality and air pollution has an effect on us all. Therefore, it is time for the next hackathon at Stadslab Eindhoven! During the weekend of the 3rd and 4th of June, we will hack the topic of ‘air quality’, which is extremely relevant due to the big effects it has on health, mobility and agriculture. That is why several Dutch governmental organisations have signed the ‘Schone Lucht Akkoord’. This document contains concrete ambitions to permanently improve the air quality in the Netherlands by 2030. There is already a lot of knowledge and data on air quality and pollution available, but how can we use that information to improve the air quality and thus our lives? That’s why we’re all needed to come up with effective, impactful and feasible solutions. A hackathon is a ‘pressure cooker session’ during which several multidisciplinary teams are dedicated to hack the chosen societal problem. ‘Hacking the problem’ means coming up with a solution that (slightly) improves the current situation. Everyone can join! Everyone has a different view on the problem which means the problem will be viewed and questioned from different angles. Thus everyone has a different perspective on the solution. Together we will hack the problem and create change!N﻿OTE: the language during the event is English. However you can decide within your group which language to speak.Challenges: 1. From awareness to behavioural changeOne of the key challenges you might be tackling during the hackathon is how to move from awareness to behavioral change. We all know that change is necessary when it comes to air quality, but how do we get people to actually take action? What factors influence people’s willingness to change their behaviour? And how can we effectively communicate the risks and benefits of improving air quality to motivate people to take action?Furthermore, what kind of role does data have in this matter? How can we use or communicate the information on air quality in such a way that residents recognize the health risks and potential benefits and adjust their behaviour accordingly?2﻿. Locate local sourcesThere is a lot of data on fine dust particles. It is always around us. However, finding the local sources of emissions appears to be a challenge. For example traffic, factories, burning wood, etc. could cause the emissionvalues to sky rocket.In cooperation, citizens and local governments could make a great impact when it comes to this challenge. That’s why TNO wants to locate those local sources of emissions in the data.And that’s why this challenge will be to create a method that locates local sources of emissions in the data.3. Knowledge through MeasurementIn the Netherlands and the region, air quality is measured in various ways and at different levels. For example, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) measures air quality at a national level through the Air Quality Monitoring Network (Luchtmeetnet), using advanced sensors. In the Southeast Brabant region, the Regional Monitoring Network (Regionaal Meetnet /ILM2.0) measures air quality at around 50 different locations. Throughout the country, residents measure local air quality using accessible sensor applications. To obtain a well-distributed and realistic view of air quality, the integration between official measurements and those made by residents is becoming increasingly important. This integration aims to provide uniform and reliable open data, which is desirable within the framework of the Environmental and Planning Act (Omgevingswet). Moreover, resident-led measurements contribute to raising awareness and enabling local governments to take actions that lead to health benefits, as intended in the Clean Air Agreement (Schone Lucht Akkoord). Therefore, the challenge is as follows:“How can we support, motivate, and facilitate residents to actively measure local air quality?”4. Creative Communication Currently, air quality measurement results are often shared through complex dashboards displaying maps with various markers, graphs, and colors indicating the quality of the air. These representations primarily focus on pollutants such as particulate matter and nitrogen. Additionally, there is a growing emphasis on maps showing the health impacts on residents. However, for most non-experts, these maps do not convey much meaning. They are challenging to interpret, contain technical terminology, and are not easily understandable for a broad audience. Perhaps there are alternative ways to visualize the vast amount of air quality data. Therefore, the challenge is as follows:“How can we communicate the information from our air quality measurements in a way that makes it easier for a broad audience to interpret?”Open challenge: Call for impactThe core message when talking about air quality is usually our health. The best-case scenario is, we all work towards a situation where air pollution is at a level that it’s no longer harmful to our health and our environment. Therefore, feel free to come up with your own challenge that contributes to this goal! Program:The program is from Sat 9 am till Sun 5 pm. If you want to work through the night that’s fine. Een hackathon is een ‘snelkookpansessie’ waarbij verschillende multidisciplinaire teams het gekozen probleem hacken. Hacken van het probleem betekent het bedenken van een oplossing die de huidige situatie (een beetje) verbetert. Iedereen mag meedoen! Iedereen kijkt anders naar een probleem wat betekent dat het probleem vanuit verschillende kanten benaderd wordt. Daarom heeft ook iedereen een andere kijk op de oplossing. Samen hacken we het probleem en maken we impact!N﻿OTE: de voertaal voor dit event is Engels. Elk groepje kan wel zelf bepalen welke taal zij onderling spreken. C﻿hallenges:1. Van bewustwording naar gedragsveranderingEen van de belangrijkste uitdagingen die we tijdens de hackathon zullen aanpakken, is hoe we van bewustwording naar gedragsverandering kunnen gaan. We weten allemaal dat verandering nodig is als het gaat om luchtkwaliteit, maar hoe krijgen we mensen zover dat ze daadwerkelijk actie ondernemen? Welke factoren beïnvloeden de bereidheid van mensen om hun gedrag te veranderen? En hoe kunnen we effectief communiceren over de risico’s en voordelen van het verbeteren van de luchtkwaliteit om mensen te motiveren om actie te ondernemen? Verder, welke rol speelt data in deze kwestie? Hoe kunnen we de informatie over luchtkwaliteit gebruiken of communiceren op een manier dat bewoners de gezondheidsrisico’s en potentiële voordelen herkennen en hun gedrag vervolgens aanpassen?2. Lokale bronnen lokaliserenFijnstof is altijd en overal aanwezig. Het is als het ware een deken die met de wind meewaait over Europa. Op lokale schaal kan verkeer, houtstook, industrie etc. hierin echter wel pieken veroorzaken. Als inwoner en lokale overheid kun je de meeste invloed uitoefenen op deze lokale bronnen van luchtverontreiniging. Daarom probeert TNO lokale data (emissies) te filteren uit alle verzamelde meetdata. Dat is momenteel heel moeilijk en intensief werk. Daarom is de challenge vanuit TNO om een methode te ontwikkelen die lokale bronnen van luchtverontreiniging automatisch uit de meetdata kan halen. 3. Meten is WetenIn Nederland en in de regio wordt op allerlei manieren en niveaus gemeten aan de luchtkwaliteit. Zo meet het RIVM in het Luchtmeetnet via geavanceerde sensoren hoe het gesteld is met de luchtkwaliteit op landelijk niveau. In de regio Zuidoost-Brabant wordt er via het Regionaal Meetnet op circa 50 verschillende punten gemeten aan de regionale luchtkwaliteit. In dit meetnet wordt ook met verschillende sensoren gemeten om de wetenschappelijk en maatschappelijke (burger)metingen met elkaar te combineren. Verspreid door Nederland meten verschillende bewoners via laagdrempelige sensortoepassingen hoe het gesteld is met de luchtkwaliteit op lokaal niveau. Om een goed gespreid en realistisch beeld te kunnen vormen van de luchtkwaliteit wordt de koppeling tussen officiële metingen en die van inwoners steeds belangrijker. Dit om ook uniforme en betrouwbare open data te verkrijgen, die in kader van de Omgevingswet wenselijk is. Bovendien helpt het meten door bewoners ook bij het creëren van bewustzijn en voor overheden tot het nemen tot lokale acties die leiden tot gezondheidswinst (zoals voorgenomen in het Schone Lucht Akkoord). Daarom de volgende challenge:“Hoe kunnen we bewoners ondersteunen, stimuleren en faciliteren om zelf aan de slag te gaan met het meten van de lokale luchtkwaliteit?”4. Creatief communicerenMomenteel worden meetresultaten rondom luchtkwaliteit vaak gedeeld via complexe dashboards met kaarten waarop allerlei puntjes, grafieken en kleurtjes informatie geven over de kwaliteit van de lucht. Het gaat hierbij meestal om weergave van verontreinigende stoffen zoals fijn stof en stikstof. Er komen ook steeds meer kaartjes rondom gezondheidsbelasting van bewoners. Voor de meeste leken zeggen dit soort kaarten niet zo veel. Ze zijn ingewikkeld uit te lezen, bevatten veel vakterminologie en zijn daarmee niet erg bruikbaar om te communiceren naar een brede doelgroep. Mogelijk zijn er andere manieren om de grote hoeveelheid data rondom luchtkwaliteit te visualiseren. Daarom de volgende challenge:“Hoe kunnen we de informatie uit onze luchtmetingen communiceren op een manier die het makkelijker maakt voor een brede doelgroep om deze te interpreteren?”Open challenge: Call for impactWaar het gaat over luchtkwaliteit, gaat het in de kern eigenlijk altijd om gezondheid. In het beste geval werken we naar een situatie waar vervuiling van de lucht is teruggedrongen tot een niveau dat niet langer schadelijk is voor onze gezondheid en die van ecosystemen. Voel je daarom vrij om een zelfbedachte challenge in te brengen die kan bijdragen aan dit overkoepelende doel!P﻿rogrammaHet programma duurt van zaterdag 9 uur ’s ochtends tot zondag 5 uur ‘s middags. Wanneer je de hele avond wilt benutten om door te werken is dat prima. Succesvolle teams bezitten vaak een breed scala aan vaardigheden, van conceptueel denken tot het maken van protoytpes en van design tot aan programmeren.
