<H4><SPAN>Developing a Global Extreme Temperature Algorithm</SPAN></H4>
<P><SPAN>The Collider is partnering with </SPAN><A HREF="https://www.globalparametrics.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><SPAN>Global Parametrics</SPAN></A><SPAN>, global experts in natural disaster risk mitigation and financial resilience in emerging economies for our March 31 hackathon. Global Parametrics has a global risk hazard platform that is used to develop analytics and risk transfer products for their clients. Among other data and models, this platform integrates general circulation models, such as the </SPAN><A HREF="https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/data-access/model-data/model-datasets/climate-forecast-system-version2-cfsv2" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><SPAN>Climate Forecast System</SPAN></A><SPAN> (CFS2) data. </SPAN></P>
<H4> Challenge</H4>
<P><SPAN>Develop an algorithm that considers all </SPAN><SPAN>vulnerable</SPAN><SPAN> populated places in the world (above a minimum population threshold) and identifies when an extreme temperature event is occurring or emerging based on short-term forecasts (1-2 weeks). </SPAN></P>
<H4>Outcome</H4>
<P><SPAN>Using the algorithm developed during the hackathon, there is a potential end product online map or analytical tool that Global Parametrics could maintain and link to from their website. This would allow anyone to see in the world where extreme temperature events might be impacting vulnerable populations.</SPAN></P>

<P><SPAN>Data scientists, statisticians, climatologists, programmers, web developers, systems thinkers, and problem solvers! All abilities welcome.</SPAN></P>

<P>Did you know Asheville is home to the world’s largest collection of climate data? <A HREF="https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information</A> houses over 37 petabytes of environmental data. At the CCx: Hack, you will have the opportunity to familiarize yourself with a host of publicly available datasets with the help of expert data navigators. </P>
