P﻿anelist: Muhammad Burhan (they/them)Engineering Program ManagerPublic SpeakerA﻿bout: Burhan is a mixed-media artist, tech enthusiast, and community organizer. Their work explores sustainability, culture, media, and LGBTQ+ rights, and they actively speak about the intersections between these topics at global universities, events, and conferences. P﻿anelist: Tomo Lazovich (they/them)Senior Research Scientist, Institute for Experiential AI, Northeastern UniversityA﻿bout: Tomo Lazovich (they/them) is an interdisciplinary researcher and machine learning practitioner with years of experience building technical solutions to complex problems from the ground up. Their work currently focuses on understanding the impacts of algorithmic systems, developing novel technical approaches that better account for model impacts, and imagining more just and equitable socio-technical infrastructures. They are also dedicated to bridging the gap between academia, industry practitioners, and policymakers to better operationalize responsible machine learning practice.Tomo is currently a Senior Research Scientist at Northeastern’s Institute for Experiential AI. Prior to that, they were a Senior Machine Learning Researcher at Twitter on the industry-leading ML Ethics, Transparency, and Accountability (META) team, where they developed a suite of metrics to measure inequality in outcomes that was ultimately deployed across the organization. They have also previously worked as an ML team lead at Lightmatter, adapting algorithms to the startup’s novel photonics-based hybrid digital-analog architecture, and at Draper, building deep learning architectures for the identification and repair of bugs in source code as part of the DARPA-funded MUSE program. Tomo holds a Ph.D. in Physics from Harvard University, where their thesis was based on the discovery and subsequent study of the Higgs Boson at the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland. They are also currently a part-time JD candidate at Northeastern University, hoping to fuse their technical knowledge with legal expertise to build practical regulatory solutions for AI. P﻿anelist: Felix Muzny (they/he)Clinical Instructor &amp; Director of Teaching Assistants, Northeastern UniversityA﻿bout: A fairly recent east coast transplant, Felix Muzny* (they/he) is teaching faculty at Northeastern University. This is their sixth year as teaching faculty, starting at the University of Colorado after doing their graduate work at Stanford University. Felix's current focus is on broadening participation in computing specifically by integrating ethics and social considerations into computing curricula and developing teaching assistant training programs with an eye towards increasing compassion and combating stereotypes within computing education. His research background is in Natural Language Processing, the field of "convincing computers to respond sensibly to human language". Felix is currently teaching the undergraduate version of this course, in which students regularly consider questions of "where did this data come from?", "who does it represent?", and "how do the systems we build in the end respond differently to users based on gender, race, etc?". M﻿oderator: Heather Gorr, PhD (she/her)Senior MATLAB Product Marketing Manager, MathworksAbout: Heather Gorr holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh and a Masters and Bachelors of Science in Physics from Penn State University. Since 2013, she has supported MATLAB users in the areas of mathematics, data science, deep learning, ethical AI, and application deployment. She currently acts a Senior Product Marketing Manager for MATLAB, leading technical marketing content in data science, AI, deployment, and advanced MATLAB and Python programming. Prior to joining MathWorks, she was a Research Fellow, focused on machine learning for prediction of fluid concentrations. Heather is also a musician and is the lead singer, songwriter, and guitar player for several bands.
