Hackathon - Puerto Rico Cuenta

Neeuko - Centro de Innovación Colaborativa en la Universidad del Sagrado Corazón

This event aims to explore the importance of data for local, civic hackers in addressing social and economic issues on the island and beyond. We want technologists, communities, and advocates to work together to build digital tools that improve people's lives, and the Puerto Rico economy.
The hackathon will provide an opportunity to leverage key census data sets via <A HREF="http://www.census.gov/data/developers/data-sets.html" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">APIs</A>, promote the usage of census data on the island, and raise awareness of the importance of information and statistics the Census Bureau collects and disseminates. A streamlined starting point for developers to access the treasure trove of data will be through the <A HREF="https://github.com/uscensusbureau/citysdk" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">US CitySDK</A>. This toolbox for civic innovators has been optimized into a user-friendly, javascript Software Development Kit for US Census Bureau data, including simple integrations to facilitate mash-ups with other open datasets. The hackathon leads into <A HREF="https://bit.ly/prcuenta16" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">¡Puerto Rico Cuenta!</A>, a multi-sector event on October 14th, bringing together data users, public & private sector leaders, non-profit organizations, and academia— among others. Both events aim to help data users make data-driven decisions that positively impact the people and communities they support.
