OBJECTIVEIn celebration of the 150th anniversary of Salmagundi, one award winner will receive $10,000 to create and sculpt a bust for the Salmagundi library bookcase, cast in bronze! The award winner will be exhibited in the Salmagundi library with their studies and maquette.Other participants of the competition will exhibit their maquettes in an alternate gallery at Salmagundi, available for sale at the sculptors’ discretion.

DEADLINEJune 15, 2022 via online submission onlySculptors may send in their submission earlier than the deadline if they so choose.No original maquette or studies should be sent to the Salmagundi Club.All maquettes, designs, and sculpture compositions will be done in the artist’s studio and not on-site at the Salmagundi Club.

SUBMISSION PROCESSThe bust should be either a historical or contemporary member from the Salmagundi Club from 1871 to today.HISTORICAL | Examples of historical members are Augustus Saint Gaudens, Stanford White, William Merritt Chase, Theodore Robinson, John LaFarge, Louis C. Tiffany Child Hassam, or Norman Rockwell. International artists are also applicable such as Anders Zorn, Alphonse Mucha. A roster of our historic members can be found on our website.CONTEMPORARY | Contemporary members may be any member of the Salmagundi Club. Preference is given to molding the bust from life.1. All sculptors must purchase a ticket on Eventbrite ($65) to register for the competition.2. Sculptors must choose one of the two (historical or contemporary) and may not submit both.3. The bust may be either head, or both head and shoulders. Sculptors should keep in mind that the final bust including its base, is to measure 18" - 24" high, 8" - 12" wide, and 10" in depth. The bust should have a finely sculpted base.4. Artists must submit images in JPG format of their maquettes. The maquettes must be 1/2 to 3/4 life-sized busts, to be made of plastelene or clay. Please note that the maquettes will be exhibited at Salmagundi.5. Sculptors should submit examples of other sculptural work, as well as the written proposal for the commission with descriptions and explanation of the Salmagundi member depicted.6. All materials must be sent to alexkatlan@aol.com by the deadline. Only serious submissions of the highest professional level will be considered.

FINAL DECISION1. The commission award announcement will be made before or on June 30, 2022 relaying jury’s decision, having considered both the sculptor’s vision and ability. A deposit payment of one-third will be sent to the sculptor.2. The final winning bust will be casted in bronze at the foundry of the sculptor’s choice in consultation with the Salmagundi Club. The sculptor may choose to either (a) deliver a plaster bust with faux bronze patina to Salmagundi and mold of the bust to the foundry, or (b) the artist may deliver both items to Salmagundi. Salmagundi Library will pay up to $6000 for the casting of the bust in bronze.3. The sculptor is to deliver the bronze bust to the Salmagundi Club by February 1, 2023 for installation in the library. Both the sculpture and the maquette will be exhibited at Salmagundi. The final payment will be paid to the sculptor upon delivery.If shipping the winning bust to Salmagundi, shipping will be paid for by the Salmagundi library.4. Unveiling the sculpture will take place at the Club’s library reception.5. The sculptor retains copyright to the winning bust (1st edition).The winning commission is subject to Salmagundi Club’s board of directors. If the winning maquette is not accepted by the Salmagundi board, a fee of $500 will be paid to the winning artist. The deposit of one third paid to the artist will not need to be returned, as it reflects the time and materials already consumed.The Salmagundi library reserves the right to reject any commission chosen by the panel of judges if the maquettes are not considered of the highest standards.
