Classroom and Written Test


Two hours of classroom time where you will be given your written SPO's. You will be asked to put cell phones and smart watches, and any other electronics away for this exam.

The State of Ohio requires that each armed security officer complete a four hour annual re-qualification to demonstrate their proficiency with a firearms. This must be completed by the expiration date shown on your certificate.

Please note the following:

  • If your certificate expires before your requalification class, you cannot re-qualify, but rather you must the complete 20 hour course before you can carry a firearm while working as a security guard.
  • A copy of your current firearms certificate is required for entry into the class.


PREREQUISITES:

Students must meet all eligibility guidelines put forth by the State of Ohio (see eligibility requirements below)

Students taking this OPOTA 4-Hour Firearms Requalification are required to present a current and valid Ohio Firearms Certification. If your certificate is expired, you will be required to take the 20-Hour Basic Firearms Qualification again.

ELIGIBILITY:

All students must meet these basic eligibility guidelines.

Students must meet all eligibility guidelines put forth by the State of Ohio.

Please review the entire disclosure document: Student Disclosure Statement of Understanding - A "yes" answer to any of the questions 1 through 18 on the OPOTC Student Disclosure Statement of Understanding, SF 101unv may prohibit a student from participating in any portion of firearms training or any classroom training that involved the handling of a firearm unless and until the OPOTC Executive Director notifies both the Student and the Commander that the potential weapons disability issue has been favorably resolved.

SUPPLY LIST:

Students must arrive prepared with the following items:

  • a Printed Copy of current Firearms Certificate
  • Photo I.D.
  • Typed (not handwritten) Enrollment form. *Fill out top section only*. Click here for document: Ohio AG Student Enrollment Form
  • Firearm - Must be a full size duty pistol (at least a 4.0" barrel) -Available to rent.
  • 50 Rounds of Ammo
  • Minimum of 2 Magazines and mag pouches
  • Speed-loader for revolvers
  • Duty Belt/ Holster
  • Ear and Eye Protection
  • Ball Cap recommended

DRESS FOR SUCCESS:

Students should follow these guidelines for maximum safety and performance on the shooting range:

  • Do wear pants with belt loops, such as jeans.
  • Do wear closed-toe shoes on the range. Shoes/boots should be laced up and tied.
  • Do wear ball caps on the range
  • Do not wear jewelry on the range
  • Do not wear tank tops or v-neck shirts on the range

PRO TIPS FOR YOUR SUCCESS:

  • Do practice shooting throughout the year and attend a Shooting Fundamentals or Defensive Handgun Skills Course close to your requalification date.(This is not required but is recommended)
  • Do show up on time and prepared for class.

  • Do know how to transport your firearm and ammo legally
  • Do shop early for ammunition, it can be difficult to find at times
  • Do not show up without registering for class
  • Do not bring firearms or ammunition into the classroom

OPOTA RESCHEDULING POLICY

This policy applies to OPOTA 4-Hour and 20-Hour Classes

  • RESCHEDULING: While we do not offer refunds, we will be happy to reschedule your class when you provide us with at least 48 hours notice before your scheduled class begins. *Rescheduling is subject to seating availability and/or discretion of Action Defense. *Rescheduling fee of 50% of your enrollment cost will apply with less than 48 days' notice. * Limit one reschedule per ticket.
  • MISSED CLASS/ FAILURE TO WITHDRAW: Should you miss your class, (or any portion of your class) without advanced notice of withdraw, or are a "no-call-no-show" you will forfeit 100% of your enrollment fee. There are no refunds on enrollment fees for missed classes. A class is considered missed if notification is received on or after the date of your class.
  • LATE ARRIVALS: You must be on time to your scheduled class and to the range. The State of Ohio sets forth time requirements that need to be met by each student and by Action Defense. Classes will begin promptly at the scheduled time, students arriving late will be asked to reschedule, and will forfeit 100% of their enrollment fee. Due to state requirements, we cannot allow exceptions to this policy for any reason. We are glad to discuss this with you. *PLEASE NOTE: this includes being late from breaks and/or lunches, and applies to each day of your course.
  • COURSE FAILURE OR DISMISSAL: There are no refunds for enrollment fees should the student fail the class or be dismissed for any other reason. Should you decide to make a future attempts at passing by enrolling into another class, you must pay the standard cost of enrollment and supplies/ rentals (if you need them)
  • CLASS CANCELLATIONS: Action Defense reserves the right to cancel any class due to enrollment, inclement weather or any other reason. In the event of a cancellation, students will be notified by email, and options for refunds or rescheduling will be provided.

Frequently asked questions

I cannot locate my current certificate, what should I do?

Try searching all your email boxes using search terms such as "attorney general" or "certificate". Don't forget to check deleted, spam, and junk folders. If you took your class with Action Defense last year, you can call for a replacement ($20 fee for replacement), or call OPOTA at 740-845-2700

Can I use Red Dot Laser Sights/ Pistol mounted Optics?

No. OPOTA SPO's require you to use iron sights

I am unable to print required forms, what do I do?

We have these documents in the classroom for those unable to do this ahead of time. Show up to your class early, at 7:45 a.m., to allow yourself time to fill them out before class.
