The Lives of Man: A Full Day with Imam Dawood Yasin

Silsila Circle is a scholar-led study circle in Salt Lake City reading the classics of the Islamic spiritual tradition together. For months we have been reading The Lives of Man over Zoom. On September 26 we finally sit in the same room to finish it with Imam Dawood Yasin.

Imam al-Haddad traces the five stages the soul passes through: the covenant of souls before creation, this life, the realm of the grave, the Day of Resurrection, and what comes after. Big questions, taught plainly, with plenty of room to ask your own.

Everyone is welcome. You do not need to have read the book or attended our earlier sessions, and you do not need any background in this subject. Men, women, families and friends of other faiths are all welcome. If you can only stay for the morning or the afternoon, that is perfectly fine.

The day at a glance

• 9:30 AM: Doors open (parking at the U takes a while, please arrive on time)
• 9:45 AM to 12:15 PM: Session One
• 12:15 to 1:30 PM: Lunch and Zuhr prayer (light lunch provided)
• 1:30 to 3:00 PM: Session Two
• 3:00 to 3:30 PM: Open questions and answers

Location

Impact & Prosperity Epicenter, Room 1010, 1755 E Student Life Way, Salt Lake City, UT 84112. The building is on the University of Utah's lower campus, near the Student Life Center, and close to the Fort Douglas TRAX stop (Red Line). Parking directions will be emailed to everyone who registers, and again the day before.

Lunch

A light lunch will be provided during the midday break. Please register so we can plan food and seating.

The book

The Lives of Man by Imam Abdallah ibn 'Alawi al-Haddad, translated by Mostafa al-Badawi, with a preface by Abdal Hakim Murad. Under a hundred pages. Helpful to read beforehand, but not required.

Guided by Imam Dawood Yasin

Imam of the Islamic Center of Greater Austin. Imam Dawood studied the Islamic sciences at the Abu Nour Institute in Damascus. He has taught and served students for years, at Zaytuna College and at Dartmouth among others, and has a gift for making difficult texts land.
