Let’s Code Blacksburg! has a two-fold purpose. First, we provide the opportunity for local residents to learn different programming languages and technologies at different levels (from beginner to advanced). Secondly, Let's Code! gives people who have expertise in a particular tech field the opportunity to share their knowledge to build experience and become recognized as experts in the community.

Hands On, Arduino Programming Projects WorkshopBy T.Weeks of LCBBNOTE: Due to surging COVID figures, we're recommending masking at this event.This three hour, hands on build and coding workshop is for the beginner to intermediate arduino maker. We have all the hardware and software, you bring your self and a Windows, Mac of Linux laptop, with <a href="https://www.arduino.cc/en/software" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">this arduino coding software installed on it</a>, and we'll provide the rest! (even FREE Pizza and bottled water by our sponsor, the CRC!)For beginner adults and younger kids we have this easy to build "musical light theremin" instrument that lets you play music with light!Or for your more advanced kids, how step by step hands on guide on building a Sibling Detector Alarm to keep your bothers/sisters out of your stuff... or make your very own MP3 player?

For you dads or IT-geeks we have a HOWTO on building an environmental sensor that will wirelessly send you TXT messages if a server closet gets too hot, or if you detect water on your basement/hot water heater floor... or even if you detect light or motion while you're away on vacation! We have all the parts in our arduino kits to use.. as well as a HOWTO guide you can take home with you, complete with an amazon parts list to build your own to-keep unit!The sky is the limit!Since this is in the evening, we even provide pizza and bottled water! Workshop Speaker:Tweeks (Thomas Weeks) holds a BS-EET / Telecom degree from Texas A&M, has works 25+ yrs in the Internet/Engineering industry for 25+ yrs and teaching STEM for the past 15yrs, and now works at <a href="https://it.vt.edu/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">VT in the central IT division</a> as well as the <a href="https://VirginiaCyberRange.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">VirginiaCyberRange.org</a> . Tweeks sits on the region's RBTC STEM and CyberSecurity committees and is very active in the NRV STEM education community. He uses Arduinos to everything from control robots, blink lights, launching large high power rockets and <a href="https://github.com/LetsCodeBlacksburg/arduino_IoT_sensors" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">create IoT devices to monitor water problems in his basement</a>. He’s a big advocate of Linux, Open Source and Open Standards/Hardware systems, likes playing with <a href="http://nrvr.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">high power rockets</a>, electronics and loves teaching kids how to peek behind the curtain of modern technology.Workshop Sponsor:Born out of a need to translate Virginia Tech research to commercial potential, the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center was established in Blacksburg in 1985.
