Facilitation Skills: Shifting from Routine to Engaging

The Minnesota Prevention Resource Center’s mission is to reduce problems resulting from alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs by enhancing the capacity of people interested in preventing these problems. We are a project of Association for Nonsmokers-Minnesota and funded by the the MN Department of Human Services Behavioral Health Administration.MPRC has provided services to the residents of Minnesota for over 30 years through the development of community campaigns, providing resources, facilitating trainings and events throughout the state, providing research assistance and library materials, and supporting people who work to promote public health and prevent the problems caused by substance misuse. This includes tobacco and drug use, underage alcohol use and the misuse of alcohol by adults.

Workshop Description Whether you are delivering training, leading a meeting, or providing an update to a board, building facilitation skills can have profound results. Increased competency in this area allows your message to resonate with your audience. As a trainer of a given topic, we often only focus on subject-matter expertise with little attention to presenting the material in a way that will resonate and engage participants. In leadership roles, we are often called upon to give presentations and/or facilitate meetings or training sessions. We can all reflect on our educational experience in which we had teachers/professors who were undoubtedly brilliant in their respective area of study - yet they were miserable at teaching. Conversely, we also had engaging, interactive, (dare I say “entertaining”?) learning environments. In this energizing workshop, participants will explore the nuances of engaging facilitation. There is no cost to attend this event, and the workshop will be recorded. Learning Objectives <ul><li>Understand the importance of attending to different learning styles.</li><li>Discover the impact of engaging participants on an emotional level.</li><li>Learn and participate in various strategies intended to make your own presentation more engaging and interactive.</li><li>Explore the nuances of virtual facilitation.</li><li>Laugh. About the Presenter Jason Anderson’s experience in training and facilitation extends much of his career. He served as the Regional Training Coordinator for the National Institute of Corrections and participated in the international Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers during his 25 year tenure in community corrections and probation. Jason transitioned into a full-time role as a consultant and trainer in early 2023, and now does curriculum development and training with the Montana Institute. He served in the US Army and has a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Moorhead State University. He is involved with local youth substance misuse prevention efforts and veterans mental health support. An avid outdoorsman and storyteller, Jason enjoys singing in his church choir and dabbles in community theater.</li></ul>
