About this event

Giving back has been a crucial part of the American fabric, and philanthropy supports a vast and diverse nonprofit sector that strengthens our country. But, in recent decades, much of the guidance for donors has been misguided -- seeking to import the frameworks of business to a vastly different terrain. Donors are told to act like “investors” and to treat nonprofits “like business.” This has led to countless unforced philanthropic errors and missed opportunities.

Effective philanthropy requires, instead, a clear-eyed and humble recognition of its uniquely challenging nature and an ability to learn from the successes and failures of the past.

In his book, Giving Done Right: Effective Philanthropy and Making Every Dollar Count, Phil Buchanan draws on his experience advising many of the world’s largest foundations and suggests an approach to giving that yields results. He also argues that the community-based nonprofits that do heroic work in every community deserve greater respect and support, especially in the face of a challenging political context, increased cynicism about philanthropy, and worrisome trends regarding giving.

About Phil:

Phil Buchanan is the president of The Center of Effective Philanthropy, and is a passionate advocate for the importance of philanthropy and the nonprofit sector and deeply committed to the cause of helping foundations and individual donors to maximize their impact. Hired in 2001 as the organization’s first chief executive, Phil has led the growth of CEP into the leading provider of data and insight on philanthropic effectiveness. CEP has been widely credited with bringing the voices of stakeholders to funders and with contributing to an increased emphasis on key elements of effectiveness.

He is co-author of many CEP research reports, a columnist for The Chronicle of Philanthropy, and a frequent blogger for the CEP Blog. Phil is also co-founder of YouthTruth, an initiative of CEP’s designed to harness student perceptions to help educators and funders accelerate improvements in K–12 schools and classrooms. In 2016, he was named the Nonprofit Times “influencer of the year.” Phil serves on the boards of directors of Philanthropy Massachusetts and the National Council on Aging.
