花和霧 flowers and fog joins artistic forces of mother-child duo Joy ChenYu Lewis and Melissa Lewis Wong, for the world premiere of their live duet performance in San Francisco's Chinatown. 花和霧 flowers and fog shares circling stories about separation, rupture and reconnection across timelines, generations and artistic mediums. Joy’s power as a vocalist weaves with Melissa’s distinct movement—in a new world of prismatic video projection, sonic landscape, and experimental drag elements.
What do we remember? What do we long for?
What’s here right now, changing in front of our eyes?
What if a parent and a child were actually two individuals destined to be with each other at important life moments? What’s possible when we reimagine who we can be to one another?
As a special prelude to the feature-length performance, guests are invited to join Joy and Melissa for a very limited capacity dimsum picnic in the historic Portsmouth Square park (before getting redeveloped in 2025). Make a separate picnic reservation here.
The feature performance is at the historic Gateway Theater (215 Jackson St - a former movie-theater-turned-Broadway-musical venue). Each performance will feature an opening number by a different guest Drag artist; and conclude with offerings of tea, snacks and a communal mahjong game for volunteers from the audience.
ASL Interpretation will be provided at both picnic/performance events on Sundays May 19th and May 26th.
