FAQs

What are my transportation options for getting to and from the event?

Aptos is 40 minutes from Cupertino over the horrible Hwy 17. It is at least 90 minutes from San Francisco, longer if you go on the incredibly beautiful Hwy 1. Your best bet is to plan to spend the day on this side of the hill (see below for some suggestions).

If you want to carpool, hit the contact link on embedded.fm. I'll organize for a while and, if there is enough interest, write an embedded.fm/blog post with open comments.

Parking! Where do I park?

The Little Owl lot is a bit small. There is a very large lot if you park behind Epicenter Cycling. (This is also where you park if you want to hike/bike in the forest without paying.)

What can I bring into the event?

A hat or hack. Snacks will be provided. There are a few power outlets if your electrical friends also need snacks.

(I sometimes get chilly in this restaurant so maybe bring socks too.)

Should I prepare a talk?

Sort of. Be prepared to talk about your hat or hack for ~2 minutes. The goal is for this event to be mostly mingling and meeting people so you'll probably have to explain it a few times. There won't be formal presentations. There may be lightning round questions.

What else should I do in the area?

The event is right next to the entrance to the Nicene Marks Forest, which has incredible biking and hiking. Stay on paths to avoid poison oak and watch for Ewoks.

Beaches! We have lots of very close beaches. Rio del Mar is free. Manresa has beautiful waves. Seacliff has a half sunken concrete ship. New Brighton has fossils (and tidepools after the party). (The last three are all state parks and have pay-for parking.) There is also cute Capitola, the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, and various other beaches but the above are my favorites.

See sea otters! Moss Landing is 20 min south on Hwy 1. You can rent a kayak or get a good view from the beach.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is 45 min south on Hwy 1.
